Hump Day Hook 1/29/14

HumpDayHooklogoLIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!

How exciting to resume the Hump Day Hook blog project, where a number of talented authors post one paragraph from a published novel or WIP. It is such fun to read everyone’s work. Our intrepid organizer, Kerrianne Coombes, scheduled this week’s excerpt to be an action sequence. My selection is from Mind Your Goddess – Wytchfae 3. In the fae dimension parallel to ours, petitioners wait their turn to ask the goddess Epona for help at her dark of the moon ritual. All seems routine with the supplications until the unexpected happens:

“The heat of the blast of negative energy swooped past Epona, searing her skin. She rolled to one side, losing her grip on the dagger. The fireball hit a table, and the impact shattered an array of crystals.”

“Fire to thaw that ruddy snow, to break enchanted ice.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

This snippet is from a paranormal fantasy WIP:

Holding her breath, Marceline pressed her thumb against the inner recesses of the cedar box. There was still a chance. She glanced down at her sister, whose eyes brightened despite the shadows beneath. Meggie hadn’t given up, and neither would she. After all, Seth had been nothing if not clever. It had to be here. It just had to. She couldn’t stand another fruitless night. Yet nothing seemed unusual about the box other than its unique curved design. Just when she had the impulse to fling it across the room, the wood shifted, and a drawer snapped open, revealing a tiny cubbyhole hidden by red velvet. Her hand shaking, Marceline brushed aside the fabric and removed a kidney-shaped slat to peer inside. Swallowing hard, she turned to Meggie. “You were right. It’s been here all the time.” A broad smile stretched her lips. “We can pay the time singer now.”

Since I am busy on edits for Wytchfae 2 – Guardian of the Deep, I wanted to stay in that world and decided to share a snippet from Wytchfae – Runes:

Whoosing from above, eerie creatures raced toward them. Rail thin and emaciated, their skin and bones appearance reminded Kelly of starved sewer rats. She gagged at their smell, even worse than the dank odor of the Grims. Their long curved teeth poked menacingly from sunken lips. The holes where their eyes should be were a dull black. They seemed a little like Grims, only creepier.

“What the hell are these things?”

???????????????????????????????A Succubus in danger. A captivated undersea Guardian.

The following is from the unedited Guardian of the Deep – Wytchfae 2, scheduled for a June release from Secret Cravings Publishing. The Succubus Layla is concerned for Samael, whose mind has been demon zapped:

“You called me that name once before. Down by the river. It’s not my name, but it’s close.” Pulling away, he frowned down at her. “Maybe you’d better explain.”

Layla squeezed her eyes shut. If only she hadn’t slipped up with his name. How in the world would she explain calling him Samael? Relying on her gut feeling, she dropped her hands, inhaled deeply and then opened her eyes and deepened her dimples into a smile. “Some say I have strong intuition, that’s all, Sam, but half the time it’s wrong. I was close though, wasn’t I?”

He didn’t answer.

Today’s offering is from Wytchfae – Runes, the first book in the Wytchfae series. An intruder appears while Kelly is transitioning the ghost Cora to her afterlife:

A spirit demon. A scout for the Grims. Kelly’s blood froze. Her eyes locked with his lime-yellow ones, and the coyote growled. He bounded back and forth, saliva dripping from his immense jaws. Kelly knew he’d give his eyeteeth to get inside. He couldn’t, as long as she maintained control.

This snippet is from the unedited Guardian of the Deep (Wytchfae 2), scheduled to be published in June:

“Samael.” Damn it, her voice shook.

He halted the stallion within a few feet of her as she lay sprawled in the shallow water. She flinched at the look he tossed her from beneath his wide-brimmed Stetson. It wasn’t the heated gaze he usually gave her, the one that melted her insides and made it hard to breathe. No, this was the distant stare of a stranger. A cold stranger with her lover’s face.

Another post from the unedited Guardian of the Deep (Wytchfae 2), scheduled to be published in June, to celebrate a contract for six more books in the series:

Cella looked at Bane and shook her head. Then her gaze fell back on Layla. “I waited here for you to show up. If you didn’t come soon, I planned to try to find you in the Guardian’s undersea domain, though I’ve never—” A horrific gasp wrenched from Cella’s throat, and the young Wytchfae collapsed. In an attempt to support her friend’s limp body, Layla sank to the floor with her.  HumpDayHooklogo

Last week’s post showcased a secondary character, the ghost Hyge. Today let’s see how he reacts when Kelly enlists his help in entering a dark dimension to rescue her Viking lover Ingvar.  Hyge looks like the Freddie Kruger actor, Robert Englund–not made up, but in his regular appearance. See him here.

“Hyge, we may need to fight our way in or out, or both. Are you ready
to do so if we have to, or would you rather stay here and have Svob go with me?”
“Missy, I say bring on any scrap you can conjure up.”
“You got it. That works for me. Protect Epona, you understand, Hyge?”
He scuffed a toe on the ground as if reluctant to take on responsibility for a goddess.
“Aye.”
Kelly continued. “Also, you see these two green lines between us and your pals?”
“I see them. Quaint little worrisome things.”

Last week’s post depicted faery witch Kelly’s distress over her lover Ingvar’s capture and her first encounter with the ghostly version of Hyge in ancient Norway. This week let’s take a further peek at the rascally thug, Hyge. I picture him as the Freddie Kruger actor, Robert Englund–not made up, but in his regular appearance. See him here.

“Hey there now,” Hyge admonished. “Your innards want tending. What you need is
some food, little girl. The cook makes some real fine pottage. Sticks to your
gullet. Why not get yourself in there and have some before you set out trying to get your
man back?”

Faery witch Kelly and Viking ghost Ingvar time travel to ancient Norway in WYTCHFAE RUNES, encountering thugs along with true evil.

She dropped to the frozen ground and put her head in her hands. She could not help the tears that streamed down her cheeks but seemed torn from her gut. Ingvar taken by the Grims and she had not been able to stop it. This was all her fault. She should never have brought him here, thinking she could help him change the past and save his sister.“Well, if the chit is not already wailing like a widow,” a mocking voice said. She looked up. Hyge stood over her, his ghostly form swaying, his throat bloody and half torn out.
