Bali’s Goddess of Fertility

RFlower7-11-2011On April 19th in Bali, women make temple offerings of fruit to Rangda, the Goddess of Fertility. Rangda has a chaos vibe similar to that of Durga and Kali and is feared by many people. That’s understandable, since creation and fertility are powerful forces that can also destroy. However, Rangda is also revered and sought after for the transformative powers that she bestows on women. Life could not continue without her.

Other fertility goddesses include Aphrodite, Freya, Flora, Inanna, Hathor, Isis, and Epona. Now this latter goddess Epona is special to me. She’s the only goddess worshipped in both Celtic and Roman pantheons and is pictured riding sidesaddle on a

horse and carrying a cornucopia of fruit. Epona appears as a secondary character in Wytchfae – Runes as someone who supports the heroine, Kelly, as she tries to save the Viking, Ingvar. Epona had a lot more to say, and she is the heroine of Mind Your Goddess – Wytchfae 3, which is due to be released by Secret Cravings Publishing in November 2013. Part of the book takes place in the fae world, and part occurs in the human world of the Roaring 20’s. When you are eating your pineapple or banana, or whatever fruit you fancy, set a bite aside for those goddesses of fruitfulness, especially Rangda, whose festival is today, and the ravishing goddess Epona.
