Tuesday Tales: Writing Victorian

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring authors posting excerpts from works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s picture prompt is a lovely dressing room in Victorian style. Enjoy the other talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

A subtle cloud of Chanel No. 5 wafted my way, as Opal Langdon stepped forward. “Peri, dear, I’m delighted to see you.”

“I wouldn’t miss one of your special dinners. Thank you for inviting me.”

“You look positively stunning in that bronze color.” She smiled graciously, but her demeanor seemed off.  I got the impression she was preoccupied.

I lowered my voice. “Is everything all right?”

She emitted an exasperated sigh and drew me to one side. “Kitty Varner showed up early, hanging all over Curt Wilkins. I came down and had a little “set to” with her.  Her lips tightened. “After telling me what she thought of me, she flounced out of here. I’m so embarrassed. I never should have said anything.”

“What about his wife? Was she here, too?”

“She came later. Curt slunk out directly after Kitty, and then returned alone, all apologetic. Butter wouldn’t melt in that man’s mouth. Kitty never came back. I’m a little shaken.”

“Of course you are. Kitty’s escapades would get on anyone’s nerves.”

“I doubt I’d have invited her if it hadn’t been for the work she’s been doing for Dulcy Tolliver. How could I invite one and not the other?”

“You need one of your special martinis. Let me find Leo.” I half turned away and then pivoted. “You aren’t wearing your pearls!” I had never seen her without her signature pearl necklace.

She gasped, and a hand flew to her unadorned throat. “I am shaken. I must have left them in the dressing room. Darling, would you mind running up and getting them for me? It’s the small mauve Victorian. Turn left at the end of the hall. Meanwhile, I’ll find Leo and get us both a drink. Pinot Noir for you?”

“Yes, thank you. I won’t be a jiff.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the picture prompt Victorian dressing room. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other amazing excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

  1. Why do I think she’s not going to find the pearls? And you left us hanging about that!! Damn! I want to know. Like this lady with the perfume and the interaction and detail about what’s going on with that man behind his wife’s back. Well done.

  2. Wow! After that anyone would need a drink! Beautiful description of the scene. I felt the angst with her. Great job!
