Tuesday Tales: Writing Groan

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring diverse authors posting excerpts from their works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s word prompt is groan. My snippet is from #7 in the Wytchfae series. It is a paranormal fantasy romance featuring the rebellious half-sister of the three Greek Fates. Enjoy the other authors of Tuesday Tales.

As if in slow motion, Resa set down the coffee cup. She couldn’t tear her gaze away from the small, usually green, frog that had come to live in her beachside bar a month or so ago. “I wouldn’t exactly call it plaid. He is red with…what the…h–he’s never been multi-colored before.”

“He changes color?”

“A lot of frogs do. Depending on their surroundings. Shades of green, yellowish, brown. Not red, though. He never has.”

“The windowsill is not plaid or red. Nothing around him is.” Lachen had removed her shades and swiveled around on the stool.

Resa stared at her sister and then back at Andy. The words poured out of their own volition. “Your eyes have sparkles of…red.”

“Don’t compare me to this low, cold creature.”

Thunder rolled, pulsating the building. “I didn’t mean to. It’s just…”

“I don’t like this. How long have you known him?”

Resa pressed fingers to the bridge of her nose. The thunder had become loud booms that moved closer and closer. “A few weeks. He showed up around Solstice.”

Lachen’s voice turned gritty and dry. “How did he come to be your familiar?”

A sinking feeling took hold that she had made some sort of major error. “He seemed friendly. I named him.”

“You named him.” Her sister gave a disgusted groan. “So he is not really your familiar.”

Thunder boomed, rattling the building, reverberating in her head. “I named him as my familiar, I tell you!”

“That doesn’t make it so! Who is he?” Her powerful sister seemed to be suggesting something nefarious.

“He can hear you. Talk to him.” Resa cried out and started forward. “Andy, what is going on? What’s the matter with you?”

“No! Don’t–”

A horrendous boom and bright flash sent Resa to her knees.

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt groan. Thanks for popping in. Return to Tuesday Tales.

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. Wow! Leaving us hanging here!! What happened to her? I love frogs and toads. I hope she keeps him safe or vice versa, if he is a special creature. A red frog. Like a poison dart frog. Intriguing!
