One of my mother’s favorite Hollywood stars, Johnny Mack Brown appeared in over 160 movies, including 127 westerns. He was the ultimate handsome, dashing cowboy. Prior to his stardom in B grade cowboy westerns, Brown appeared in numerous more elevated films with the likes of Jean Harlow, John Wayne, and Clark Gable. In 1931 Brown filmed Laughing Sinners, but all his scenes were cut and redone with

Clark Gable. It’s ironic because Clark Gable was another of my mother’s favorite stars. After being cast out of Laughing Sinners, Brown morphed into the western cowboy hero. My mother and countless other cowboy lovers reaped the reward.

  1. I’m not familiar with Johnny Mac Brown but I have a soft spot for old movies and westerns. My mother introduced me to a lot of “old time” movie stars. My favorite was Stewart Granger, who did a lot of swashbucklers. And I never tire of watching King Solomon’s Mines.

Love the pictures, Flossie. Johnny Mac Brown was definitely dashing!
