Vintage Friday: Michael York as Sexy Viking 1969

Today is the birthday of my all time favorite actor, Michael York. Over a career that has spanned several decades, the British icon starred in numerous memorable films, including Cabaret, The Three Musketeers and its sequel, Murder on the Orient Express, The Island of Doctor Moreau, the zany Austin Powers movies, The Last Remake of Beau Geste, Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Justine, and Logan’s Run. IMBD lists 161 acting credits.

He is also an accomplished writer, and I am the proud owner and reader of several of his books. I love it that he and his wife Pat, an accomplished photographer, have remained together since their young years. One of my favorite Michael York roles was that of Jolyon on the television mini series, The Forsyte Saga. I always remember a line he had in that show. As he talked with a cousin with whom he had differences, he proclaimed, “You bar me.” What an excellent way of describing an irrational antipathy for someone!

In another mini series, Jesus of Nazareth, Michael York portrayed John the Baptist and added stellar complex dimensions to the character. My uber favorite Michael York performance, however, is that of Guthrum the Dane in Alfred the Great from 1969. Guthrum is just too delicious. Michael York is the ultimate sexy Viking in this film. The energy and animal passion he poured into the role inspired my Viking Ingvar in Wytchfae Runes.

Please join me in wishing Michael York a Happy Birthday. Cheers & Happy Reading! Flossie Benton Rogers, Conjuring the Magic with Paranormal Fantasy Romance

  1. Happy Birthday Michael YorK!
Thank you for the great characters you played and the delightful moments your movies offered people all over the world!
Well, Flossie, he is a great actor. I saw some of the movies you mention here. I want to add to the list one I saw last year – Till We Meet Again,an adaptation of Judith Krantz’s bestseller.

  2. Happy birthday to Michael York! Flossie, I just adored him in so many of the roles you mentioned. I always tend to think of the Three Musketeers and the Island of Dr. Moreau when I think of Michael. I had forgotten Logan’s Run, Beau Geste and, especially, Jesus of Nazareth. No one has done John the Baptist like Michael York. I never saw Alfred the Great, but the clip was awesome. And that picture you found of him is just stunning! What a great actor!

    1. Oh, I’m so glad, Mae. You know there was almost a different ending for Dr. Moreau? They almost showed her with child after leaving the island. Michael and the others didn’t care for that ending at all, and it was nixed.

  3. Oh happy memories of some of my favourtite films with this actor. I loved the film Logan’s Run and Mr York was totally swoon worthy in the Three Muskateers. Happy Birthday Mr. York and many more of them I hope. Thanks for this, Flossie, I really enjoyed the film clip.
