Vintage Friday: Devil’s Food Cake 1967

Welcome to the party!

Do you have a special birthday celebration that you remember especially fondly? Family and friends are what make it special. Please join me in celebrating my birthday with a tasty devil’s food cake and soulful ballad, not to mention some heart felt, blessed memories. I’m so pleased to have you here today.

16thbirthday_Fotor1AAMy mother prepared the treat for my 16th birthday. Sweet 16! Thank you, Mom! You made every moment special. Several friends who attended that party are still close friends today.

Devils Food Cake

2 ½ cups sifted cake flour
½ cup cocoa
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ sticks butter, softened
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup of boiling water
In large mixing bowl, sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

In large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar together with an electric mixer on medium to high speed or by hand. Add eggs one at a time, creaming well after each egg. Stir in vanilla extract.

To the creamed butter mixture, add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately and beat on medium speed with electric mixer or by hand, beginning and ending with flour.

Carefully blend in hot or boiling water. The batter will be thin.

Immediately pour into greased and floured 8″ x 11″ oblong pan or three 8″ or 9″ round or square baking pans. Bake about 35- 45 minutes in a preheated 350F oven. Do not over bake.

Cool before icing.

Creamy Chocolate Frosting

1 stick butter, softened
½ cup cocoa
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pound box extra fine powdered sugar
5 – 8 tablespoons cream

In large mixing bowl, cream butter, cocoa, salt, and vanilla extract together on medium to high speed with an electric mixer or by hand. Beat in sugar, adding just enough cream to make it a spreading consistency. Beat on high speed until extra creamy.

Ice the cooled cake.

Enjoy one of my favorite songs from 1967:

I hope you got a kick out of our sojourn to my sweet 16 in 1967, Mom’s delicious devil’s food cake, and the fabulous Bobbie Gentry ballad. Birthdays fly by, but good friends and vintage recipes are always a treat. Thanks for making my day special. Please come again soon.

  1. My birthday wish for you is that you continue to love life and never stop dreaming. May beauty and happiness surround you, not only on your special day, but always! Happy Birthday, my friend!
    Loved the ballad.

Like you, my best memories regarding my birthday celebrations are linked to my family – mother, grandparents, my aunt. They always made me feel special. Cakes and books were and still are favorite gifts. And they gave me all of them despite the times we lived.
    Here’s to you, my friend!

  2. Flossie, may you have a blessed birthday that will inspire fond memories, just as this one did from 1967, I love the photo!

And the song, Ode to Billie Joe is one I listen to frequently. Like a lot of other old music, I’ve purchased it from Amazon and downloaded it to a jump stick. “Ode” is part of a collection I listen to in my car on my daily drive to and from work. Wonderful to find it here. Such a haunting song.

    Happy Birthday, my friend!

  3. What a wonderful photo to remind you of so many good things in life. And thanks for sharing the ballad, I love that one and hadn’t heard it in years! Hope you have a great day.
