Vintage Friday: Ch–Ch–Ch– Changes 1972

1972aCROPPEDIn 1972 my beloved husband Ronnie and I were enjoying our first year of married life. With him working and me in college, we lived in our first little home in Weeki Wachee. I drove all the way to St. Pete for school. All around us changes were going on, some earthshaking to everyone at the time and some startling in retrospect. Here are some of the highlights:

The median household income languished under $10,000.
A stamp cost $.08.
Maxi dresses and mini skirts were in.
The first Star Trek fan con was held.
In January 1972 the Miami Dolphins lost the 1971 Super Bowl but went on to win every game in their 1972 season, including the 1972 Super Bowl.
The world met Ziggy Stardust.
Movie premiers included Cabaret with Michael York, Deliverance, and The Godfather.
Viet Nam was on the minds and in the hearts of most all Americans.1972BcroppedCOLOR
President Nixon visited Communist China.
The Watergate scandal began.
The Supreme Court declared the death penalty unconstitutional.
Governor Wallace was killed.
Terrorists murdered 11 athletes at the Munich Olympics.
We lost poet Ezra Pound, J. Edgar Hoover, and President Truman.
The final manned space flight to the moon returned to earth.
MAS*H premiered.
ABBA formed.
Atari unleashed the arcade version of Pong.
The following were introduced—email, digital watches, HBO, CDs, CAT scans, Prozac.

  1. And I was living in Norway with family for several months! Great remiinders. I had minis, midis and maxis!

    1. I am so envious of your time in Norway. That had to be wonderful! In my first book Wytchfae Runes, the characters time travel back to ancient Norway. I’ve always been drawn to the location since reading about it in elementary school.

  2. What a great stroll back through memory lane! I was a kid in ’72, but I remember my parents bought a brand new white Chevy Nova and it was the first car for us where you had to fasten seat belts or the car shrieked at you with one of those alarm bells. Back then we used to buckle the belts behind us on the seat (there were no shoulder straps, just lap belts). I couldn’t conceive of doing that now!

    1. My mother had two friends who always had to compete with each other. One bought a gold Nova and the other had to run out and get a silver one. It’s amazing to think back on no seat belts and so many other things. You wonder how we made it through:)
