Mythic Monday: Wag-by-the-Way

Wag-by-the-Way is a diminutive Scottish fairy whose role includes guarding Lowland roads during the most troublesome hours of the night. He keeps watch that the nefarious traveler with ill will on his mind gives a wide berth to Wag’s selected home base. He serves as protector for members of his adopted human family, looking after their safety, health, and well-being. Wag is a loyal creature and totally devoted to his humans.

He is usually friendly but is sometimes antagonistic to guests in the home. In such cases, his long, catlike tail wags in irritation, and he may even toss objects at the visitors. Some see his behavior as a warning for guests to uphold the courteous demeanor expected of them by custom and good manners.

Wag performs domestic duties in the household and is often seen coated with ashes. The reason is that his cold blooded nature needs close proximity to the hearth, and he loves to huddle upon the banked embers to warm himself. A human family with a Wag-by-the-Way is fortunate, as he will never betray or forsake them, and in his long life will continue to serve for many generations.

Unfortunately, this type of dwarf sprite, steadfast, sturdy, and satisfied with hearth and home, is fading away with the passing centuries. As people tend to move around and no longer remain in their family homes, Wag-by-the-Way is seen less and less frequently. This is a sad situation—to lose a little being that has proven to be so faithful and benevolent. So I say, here’s to you, Wag-by-the-Way, and thank you for your long service. I trust you are well cared for and content in your new abode, secluded and safe in the land of fairy.

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. I love posts about sprites and faeries. I wasn’t familiar with Wag-by-the-Way but he sounds like many of the household sprites of legend, doing simple chores, and attached to his host family. Very cool post! 🙂

  2. Wag-by-the-way is welcome in my home. He sounds like a comfy little creature.
