Tuesday Tales: Writing Steel by Flossie Benton Rogers

Flossie’s words of wisdom: Even when you’re bloody, bruised, kidnapped, and bound, don’t count out a cowboyCowboydreamstime_l_20636299

Tuesday Tales is a weekly blog featuring diverse authors who post excerpts from their WIPs based on word and picture prompts. Our word prompt today is steel, and the snippet is from a story currently being reworked as Jaycee’s Cowboy. Please visit the other fabulous authors at Tuesday Tales.

When the craft reached the edge of the water, Knob picked her up as if she were a leaf and tossed her in. Whimpering, she crumbled between the seats. The ogre plopped down beside her.
Mador also stepped in. “You hurt her only when I say so, not on your own whim. I shall only warn you this once, understand, Knob?”   Mador’s icy tone sliced through her.
Knob’s eyes widened and he nodded.
“Good. Let’s not forget who is master here.”
Summoning her strength, Jaycee fought to steel herself against the pain. She braced her feet and lunged up in the boat. Maybe she could overturn it before it headed out into the deeper water.
Mador jerked her down to the seat. “Hold her, damn it, Knob. Only a few more minutes to get out to the sub and then I’ll take care of her.”
She inhaled thick, sticky air. The sodden cloth between her lips muffled her scream. How ironic it would be if she choked to death on her own blood.
The craft skipped along over the waves. The low-pitched hum of the fae submarine came louder the closer they got. An almost-full moon illuminated the waters and desolate shoreline. Her heart pounded in her chest, and breathing came hard. Every moment took her farther away from Samael.
From the riverbank came the sound of hoof beats. Mador jumped to his feet.
Jaycee peered out toward the rapidly receding shoreline at a moving cloud of dust. In its midst she made out a horse and rider. Samael. Her heart sang that he had come for her.
     Demon spawn!” Mador’s voice crackled.
The craft had almost reached the sub. Conveyance workers stood on its hull ready to pull the trio to safety.
She doubted the crew would question her condition of being bloody, bruised, and bound. In their minds, it could well be part of a perverted fantasy vacation.
A tremor racked her body as she realized how well Mador had planned her abduction.
“The woman first,” Mador ordered the conveyance worker hovering on the bottom of the descended gangway.
The sailor’s arms came around Jaycee and the ladder slid upward.
