Tuesday Tales: Writing Servant

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring authors posting excerpts from works in progress based on word and picture prompts. Keep in mind that the snippets are unedited. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s word prompt is servant. Enjoy the other talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

The coroner had removed Naomi’s body. Here in Sew What and next door at Vape On the investigation continued in high gear. I sat by the wall in the front room with a bottle of water. I was out of the way, yet still able to see and hear what most of what was going on. Roy Deeson took my statement as the officer in charge, with the understanding that I would follow up later at the station.  I had persuaded him to let me hang around until Naomi’s nephew Curtis arrived.

“Stay out of the way until then, Peri. I mean it. The Captain is not happy about you being involved again.”

“Well, I’m not really involved, Roy, just because I happened to be here this morning…”

“You’re two for two now. Two murders in Glisten, and you discovered both of the bodies.”

I kept my trap shut about the possibility of a third. After all, Mr. Upshaw’s untimely careen off the bridge had been ruled an accident.

Roy must have seen something in my expression because he narrowed his somber blue eyes and opened his mouth to harp on me some more.

Just then, thank the Lord, Curtis raced in the back door, stirring up the air like a Tasmanian devil. “Where is she? Where’s my aunt?”

Roy and I each grabbed an arm and got him into a chair. Roy explained. “Doc Whitten is taking care of things, Curtis. You can see her over there later. Call him first.”

“Call him? Oh, at the morgue, you mean.” He was shaking all over. Even his feet couldn’t remain flat on the floor.

Roy motioned one of the officers to bring water.

Curtis took a swallow and sloshed it on his shirt.

Roy’s notebook and pen came out. “When did you last see your aunt?”

“Um, Friday a week ago. I’ve been down south taking care of her properties. She shouldn’t have been here alone working. I told her and told her this area is dangerous. She didn’t even need to work, for crissake. She was always a servant to the job. She could have retired five years ago.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt servant. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other amazing excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

  1. Oh dear me, the body count keeps growing! Wonder who the killer is?? Wonderful excerpt!

  2. Okay, so who’s going to be next? And who’s doing this and why?? I love your use of the word prompt. Highly original. I’m enjoying this story. Mystery was my first favorite genre. Looking forward to more next week.
