Tuesday Tales: Writing Moon Tree

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring diverse authors posting excerpts from their works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s picture prompt is moon tree. My snippet is from Silver’s Angel, a standalone Wytchfae prequel to Lord of Fire. Enjoy the other authors of Tuesday Tales.

On the way to the galley, he grabbed a shirt from his bunk and pulled it over his head. They both opted for coffee, and he started the machine. His brow furrowed, as he worried about her lack of restful sleep. “Will it keep you awake?”

Her eyes crinkled into merriment. “It never has. Maybe it’s because late-night coffee is dessert coffee.”

He cocked his head. “Dessert coffee. So—that means cream, sweetener, and—what else?”

She draped the blanket over the mini booth and opened the cupboard door. “Let’s see what there is. Ooh, you have real sugar. That’s grand. Here we go!” She sniffed a small bottle. “Cinnamon to mix with the sugar. Now we’re talking.”

He took a carton from the fridge. “No cream, I’m afraid. Only half and half.”

“Perfect.” She set about pouring and mixing.”How do you want yours?”

“I usually go for black, but it seems only right to try it your way.”

He enjoyed the way her smile reached her eyes. “You can’t go wrong, I promise you.”

He was rather transfixed in watching her. She didn’t look cold anymore. Her cheeks had roses. She had a glow about her, as if the moon shone from her skin. It made him want to stay close.

She peeked up from stirring. “So you’re a night owl?”

“Oh, yeah, from necessity mostly. Lyrics seem to come more–” He halted mid-sentence, watching her lick sugar crystals from her bottom lip. He sat down abruptly.

When she leaned over to slide his cup, a gleam of silver appeared at the edge of her tank top.

“That’s an interesting pendant. What is it?”

She held it up for him to inspect. “A Celtic fearn tree. Better known as an alder. See the moon peeking through the branches?”

“Fearn, as in your last name?”

That smile again, only a little sad this time. “Yes, and my clan’s name.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the picture prompt moon tree. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other winning excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. I like that theory of night coffee being dessert. LOVE how you used the photo prompt and I somehow knew that was the one you would pick. Jillian

  2. Love the coffee talk. It sounded so delicious that, though I never drink coffee, I wanted some!
