Tuesday Tales: Writing Hazy

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring diverse authors posting excerpts from their works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I continue to get back into the swing of things. I’m so pleased you can join me today. This week’s word prompt is hazy. My snippet is from a paranormal piece. Enjoy the other authors at Tuesday Tales.

Dru pivoted, scouring all directions. There was no van in sight and no way it could have plowed through the brush without leaving a trail.

Lin raised her arm infinitesimally, grimaced, gave up, and ended up with a slight nod toward the road. “Maybe it’s around that curve.” Clutching her wrist, she bit off a moan.

Although the urge to run and find out had Dru bouncing on her feet, Lin’s obvious discomfort pulled her up. She fished for the stone in her pocket. “Hematite.” She tucked it into Lin’s shirt pocket and smoothed her friend’s long, dark hair from her face. “It’s soothing for bones.”

“Thanks.”

“I’m sorry you’re hurt. Glory needs to wrap your wrist or I can do it as soon as I see about that van.”

“The EMTs won’t be long. I’m fine. She needs to take care of Jena. Go on and find the van. See if the folks are all right.”

With a last look toward the back seat where Jena lay, Dru headed toward the curve. She walked along the road’s edge rather than attempting to navigate the narrow, scrubby shoulder. If a car came along, she’d hear it. Meanwhile, questions bombarded her mind. The van had knocked up against the SUV, so why had it pulled around the curve to park? Or had the driver lost control and it just came to rest there? Maybe he was hurt as well. She picked up the pace.

Dusk had brought on hazy conditions, and full dark was coming fast. Choruses of crickets had set up a ruckus. Reaching the middle of the curve, she stopped and scanned the area. No van was parked anywhere in sight. Standing in the road, she used her phone’s flashlight to peer into the woods. Mysterious shapes and shadows loomed out at her from all sides, but there was no sign of the van. A hit and run! But why? Brow scrunched in thought, she had started back toward her friends when the sound of a vehicle intruded into her consciousness. She waited for the siren, but there was none. She hurried off the road, the ground soft and squishy beneath her sneakers.

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt hazy. Thanks for stopping by. Return to Tuesday Tales.

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. Okay, so what happened to the van? Now I need to know. Great piece here. Love the description of the ground, too.
