Tuesday Tales: Writing Fly

Welcome to Tuesday Tales where you’ll find entertaining, first-look excerpts from a group of hard-working writers. You can see works in progress unfold week by week. I do sometimes enjoy skipping around, though, rather than writing linearly. Today’s word prompt is fly. Make sure to visit the other talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

I became aware of my surroundings. Cold. So cold and wet. A car jostling. Pain blared in my head, and I groaned.

Fingers brushed my cheek. “Open your eyes now. Come on, stay awake.”

Vague impressions of pelting rain and a moving vehicle penetrated my foggy brain. Thunder boomed. I cracked open my eyelids to see a waterfall fly by. At least that’s how it appeared. My eyes fluttered blessedly shut. After a moment I could tell the car only crept along, but it still made my stomach lurch. My hair streamed into my face. Wet clothes plastered my body. Someone had been kind enough to cover me with a jacket. Out of the fur tickling my chin floated a faint scent of aftershave. Oh! An impression returned. A man had carried me. I tried to shift my head to see the driver.

“Easy. Keep still.”

The deep voice rang bells in my head. Why did it sound familiar? Something around my neck prevented me turning my head. “What…” I touched a kind of stiff padding.

“It’s a neck brace– just a precaution. Stay awake but try not to move. We’ll be there in two shakes.”

I relaxed a little. His voice sounded soothing. I knew that voice or had heard it. Random  images and impressions floated in my mind. I fought to clear my head. I had been driving up to Whistling Rock to see Bonbon. But why? Papers! I had found papers about her father in the secret desk compartment. A storm broke, and I couldn’t turn the car around. Had I hit something? I remembered a loud pop. The airbag?

“Are we still…” I was trying to ask if we were still heading up the ridge. A violent shiver wracked my body.

The man tugged the coat back over my shoulder.

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt fly. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other amazing excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

  1. Just read last week’s so I’d know what was going on this week. Fabulous again. You have me at the scene, practically wiping the wetness from my hair. Wonderful snippet. Can hardly wait for next week.
