Tuesday Tales: Writing Fingernail

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring authors posting excerpts from works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s word prompt is fingernail. Enjoy the other talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

She held up the earthworm, her honey-colored eyes crinkling with a hint of mischief. Against her white-tipped fingernail, it appeared a grubby residue from a half billion years ago.

He was about to join in the fun with some lame joke when a flash of orange bounded out of nowhere and leapt onto the wooden table in front of Peri. The excited ball of fur proceeded to hiss and bat the air with one determined paw.

Peri hastened to deposit the worm in one of the pots of dirt and dove toward the cat. “Sir Clive! You know your dinner is to be cooked.” She glanced up to tell Riley, “He thinks anything that wiggles is fair game.”

He nodded. “Predatory instincts.”

Her voice softened as she cooed to the cat, soothing his loss with strokes and scratches to his sizable orange head. Before long, feline eyes blinked and fluttered half closed in blissful response.

Riley became half hypnotized as well by the sight of the soft hand caressing the animal. Each time she repositioned her hand to restart the stroke, gold light trickled out the ends of her fingers and merged with the tufts of thick orange fur. Blinking, he straightened to a ramrod in the chair. What the hell? He looked again but now saw nothing strange. It must have been a trick of the light caused by the color of the cat’s coat and the pure satisfaction he got from watching this woman do anything at all.

She ceased petting and peered his way. “What’s the matter? You look a bit stricken over there.”

He shrugged it off. “Nothing. I was just thinking that old Sir Clive is a lucky buck to have an owner like you.”

She chortled. “Owner? Haven’t you ever shared quarters with a cat? It’s the other way around actually.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt fingernail. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other amazing excerpts at Tuesday Tales.
