Tuesday Tales: Writing A La Mode

Tuesday Tales — step inside! Here is where you’ll find entertaining excerpts produced during smiles, tears, and hours of keyboard dancing. These are unedited snippets by a group of hard-working writers, based on word and picture prompts. You can see our works in progress unfold week by week. I call the above picture prompt a la mode. A picturesque sign alerted me that I had reached A La Mode, the darling of Glisten’s ice cream aficionados.

A bell tinkled as I entered and cast my eyes around. A mom and two young children sat near the front, deep into their various flavored treats. Robin offered a frenetic wave from a bistro table in the far corner.

Joining her, I moved my stool so that it also rested against the wall. “You snagged a nice spot.”

She snickered. “It’s rarely crowded this early in the afternoon. You should see the shop on Saturdays and some late afternoons though. School rewards and all that.”

Darlene, a pleasant-faced woman with an endearing dimple in one cheek, appeared beside us. “Is this the old school friend I’ve been hearing about?”

“Good things only,” Robin assured me with a grin. “Darlene, meet Peri Nash. We were practically twins back in fifth grade. Peri, say hello to Darlene Tate, guardian of miracle flavors such as Violet Champagne and Rum Tutti Frutti.”

“Welcome back to Glisten, Peri.” Darlene pointed to a handwritten board on the wall behind the counter. “Today’s specials are listed, but if none of those appeal, maybe you’d like to stroll along the glass freezer and see what looks good.”

While I inspected the board, Robin ordered brownie pistachio. An unusual flavor had already popped out to tickle my taste buds. “I’ll have white chocolate habanero, with a cup of hot coffee.”

While Darlene retreated to assemble our treats, I asked Robin if she had grown up around here. “I don’t remember her.”

Robin’s wagging eyebrows suggested that we were on a secret mission and had mere moments to reconnoiter. “Never mind that. I want to know about…you know.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the picture prompt a la mode. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other amazing excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

  1. Oh no! What an ending!! You can’t leave us like this. I need to know what “you know” means!! Great way to suck me in and leave me wanting more.

  2. Ok, now I want to try white chocolate habanero! I love going along with Peri to search for clues. This has been an amazing journey!

  3. Know about WHAT???? You devil, you! Teasing us with that ending…after all those delicious sounding ice cream flavors!
Hmmmm…and now I’m wondering what I have tucked in the freezer. But I know it won’t be as good as that brownie pistachio sounds.
