Tuesday Tales 2023-9-19 Smart

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, where writers use word and picture prompts in our stories. This snippet is from a cozy mystery set in Glisten, Georgia. The week’s word prompt is smart. When you finish reading, make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

A quick glare came and went on the face of one of the women. Her name hadn’t registered with me. The glare was gone in a flash, but I had caught it. Kitty’s presence had spiced up the party for sure. She seemed to elicit strong reactions in some of the townspeople.

A few minutes of discussion about the festival ensued. I focused and tried my best to keep straight who was who and who was doing what for the festival, knowing all the while that miss smarty Robin and her notes would save my bacon in that regard. Thank goodness for my friend and her flying thumbs. For the overall picture, the best I could make out was that festivities would begin on Friday night with pumpkin lanterns, spooky decorations, a costume parade, and a whiskey tasting at Sidecar Tavern.

Saturday plans included children’s activities, highlighted by costumes and the pumpkin races in Ledbetter Field. A plethora of general events would occur, including costume competitions, dignitary speeches, an antique car show, and music on the Square. Heritage members would facilitate logistics by strolling around in historical costumes. Saturday evening was the time I had to worry most about– the adult scavenger hunt, culminating in refreshments and prizes at Tea Thyme. It would be our chance to shine.

“Don’t worry about a thing,” Vance told me. “The scavenger hunt is new this year and the brainchild of the Business Alliance. I can’t take credit. It was the suggestion of Sandra Parton here.” He gave a half bow to miss vintage pencil dress. “Sandra and I will be available to you 24/7,” he told me, “to answer any questions or help in any way as you prepare. We know you have a lot on your plate right now with Jack’s condition. We’re just relieved to have you partner with us.”

“Absolutely,” Sandra echoed his sentiment. “The scavenger hunt is quite a successful enterprise where I come from and will be a hit down here, too.”

“Thank you. I’m sure I’ll take both of you up on your offer, as all this is new to me. Sandra, you’re a business owner, I take it?”

“Yes.” She handed me a card.

Vance popped out a card, as well. “The Business Alliance doesn’t have an office per se. We meet among our business locations, but when I’m not engaged in Alliance business, you can usually find me at Wardlow Motors.”

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed the snippet inspired by smart. If you haven’t done so already, check out the other excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

  1. Love the allusions to Halloween already. I have a feeling something special is going to happen around that scavenger hunt. I’m bracing myself. And I love the name, “Sidecar Tavern.” So perfectly apt!! Great job, lady.
