Tuesday Tales 2023-12-19 Cream

Merry Christmas! My wish is for you to enjoy time with your family and friends. Nothing is more important. Welcome to Tuesday Tales, powered by a small group of authors, where prompts inspire passages in the books we’re writing. Today’s word prompt is cream. My snippet is from a cozy mystery set in fictional Glisten, Georgia. When you finish reading, make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

I settled back in my chair, soothed by the warm drink. After I texted a question to Robin, she replied with her lunch selection.

“Is she on her way?” Vance inquired.

“Yes, and tuckered out after only half a day.”

He chuckled. “Must have been some staff meeting.”

Our waitress returned, brandishing a memo pad. “What can I get for you?”

Vance looked at me. “Ready to order or do you want to wait?”

“We can go ahead. She told me what she wanted.” I smiled at the waitress. “I’ll have a grilled cheese and a cup of cream of asparagus soup,” I said. “Another person will be joining us.” I consulted the menu again, running down the list with a finger. “She wants the Big Mouth Cheeseburger and fries.”

“Great choices.” She turned to Vance. “And what can I get for you? The usual?”

“You got it. Reuben on rye, extra kraut, with fries.”

She grinned and moved away to turn in the ticket.

I sipped mulled wine, holding the cup with both hands. “This is good,” I enthused. The temperature outside is not really that cold, but this hits the spot.”

“Glisten sits in a bit of a geographic pocket. Today we fell prey to humidity,” he clarified. “Not enough for rain, but fog will set in this afternoon.”

“Really?” My brows lifted.

“I make sure to listen to the morning forecast. Helps to know if auto sales traffic might be impacted.”

“I suppose it’s beneficial for your many community activities, too, the Pumpkin Fest, for example.” I straightened. “What happens if it pours rain all day?”

“We have contingencies established. Most activities would continue. Some, like the costume parade, would move indoors.” He gave me a teasing grin. “Don’t be conjuring up any ill weather!”

I held up protesting hands. “Not me. Tea Thyme has a stake in seeing that the event runs smoothly.” I sighed. “Hopefully, this murder business will be over and done with by then.”

He pursed his lips. “I know you’re friends with Sergeant Deason. Has any progress been made on the investigation?”

“Roy doesn’t say. They’re keeping things quiet. The chief investigator is Detective Pelier. But you know everyone involved. I thought maybe you could tell me something.”

He shook his head. “Not really. Just rumors, per usual in a small town.”

I leaned toward him. “What have you heard?”

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed the piece inspired by the word cream. If you haven’t done so already, check out the other excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

Cheers & Happy Reading!
