Tuesday Tales 2022-4-26 Neck

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, where authors write weekly excerpts based on word or picture prompts. I hope our efforts provide some entertaining moments for you. The word prompt this week is neck. This week I return to my Highlander Time Travel romance featuring Torsten and Lana. In this scene Lana is still in Florida with her grandmother. When you finish reading my snippet, make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

After stopping at reception for a visitor’s pass, Lana made her way through the oversized double doors and down the hall to the elevator. She pushed the button for the third floor and edged to the back as a group of people piled in after her. They chattered cheerfully among themselves. One carried a fluffy bear sporting a pink ribbon and a metallic fuchsia balloon with the words “Welcome Home.” The young woman smiled apologetically at Lana as the balloon bobbled into her cheek. Bundling her purse under an arm the woman yanked the string in tighter. “Sorry. It about got away from me. We’re rather noisy, I’m afraid. It’s good spirits. Our Mom has had a hard time, but she gets to come home today.”

Lana returned the smile. “I’m so glad.”

“Are you visiting a relative, too?”

Lana nodded. “My grandmother. She’ll be in for a few more days and then will be transferred to rehab. She’s doing well though. Feisty as ever.”

“Good. Best wishes to her.” The group exited on the second floor, leaving Lana alone for the few seconds it took for the elevator to make its way up one more floor and jolt to a stop. On her way down the hall, she waved to a nurse she had become familiar with. As she approached the open door, she heard Gran say intently, “But I want her to go, Crispin. I’m right as rain, and she needs this.”

“It’s me, Gran,” she called out, as she turned into the room. She quickly scanned her face and was relieved to see color returning. After kissing her cheek, she greeted Crispin Yale. He looked as dapper as ever, with snowy white hair and anxious fingers clutching his cap. “Are you making her behave, Mr. Yale?”

“I’m doing my best, but you know this stubborn woman as well as I do. Rock climbing indeed.”

Gran sat up straighter, smoothing out the well laundered blanket covering one leg. The other leg wore an elevated bulky cast. Her eyes held a gleam of mischief. “You’re just mad I went without you.”

He grimaced and shook his head. “You’re lucky you didn’t break your neck.”

“Next time, Crispin, I’ll make sure the We’ve Peaked club doesn’t let the gym change our monthly climb to conflict with your chess match day.”

They both stared at her, and Lana repeated, incredulous, “Next time?”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the prompt, neck. Thanks for stopping by. Check out the other excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

  1. Gran sounds like quite the character. I like her already, and the name Crispin is one I’ve always held a soft spot for. Great snippet, Flossie!

  2. The last line made me laugh! I love the portrait of the older folks as lively, feisty and fun. Not many people think that. And great use of the word prompt! Looking forward to more about these intriguing folks.
