Mythic Monday: Rune of the Day – Ehwaz by Flossie Benton Rogers

Ehwaz2To me, divination is not so much to see what the future brings, but to get insight into the possibilities of the moment. Runes are one of my favorite methods. Runes constitute an ancient Germanic alphabet in use starting in the 1st century AD. They were valuable to the Scandinavians, Anglo-Saxons, and other Germanic peoples, for writing as well as for magical purposes.

Rune layouts range from simple to complex, with the simplest being a single rune drawn in reply to a question. The question should be in a generalized form such as the following: “What do I need to know about my love relationship at this moment?” Once the rune is selected, the reading works best if the recipient does the following: Sit quietly and still your mind. Open your heart. Consider the following descriptions in connection with love, lovers, significant others, and romantic relationships. In stillness and openness comes the true meaning of the runes.

Today we look at Ehwaz, a rune that has kept its shape as our modern letter M. It is one of the eight runes of Tyr and, of course, part of the traditional Germanic Futhark or runic alphabet. Ehwaz is symbolized by a horse and denotes movement in life. This can include physical shifts such as a change of job or dwelling but also can signify major life transitions and the dawning of a new attitude. There is nothing sudden or abrupt about Ehwaz. Its energy is slow, like the budding of a leaf or a wagon train heading west. It’s the type of instance where you look back and see the dramatic change that took place, not in a flash, but rather in increments and short unfoldings of time. There is something steady and stable about this rune, and its energy asks for you to have trust and go with the momentum that has beckoned. It also asks for you to feel gratitude for your progress and to share your good fortune with others, especially your loved ones.

I hope you enjoyed our Rune of the Day. What are your favorite forms of divination?

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. Loved this post, Flossie. I struggle with runes. My favourite things are the Tarot which are more visual than the runes, well at least they are to me. I have been working with them for a long time and so I suppose I am more comfortable with them.

  2. Thank you for another instructive post!
I love ALL forms of divination. Unfortunately I’m not skillful in any. I want to learn Tarot/cards reading, but I think it’s a bit late in life for me. I do believe in them.

  3. Although I don’t practice divination, it’s an intriguing post. I’m fascinated by the history of ancient runes. I once did a short story revolving around the Futhark that required a good deal of research into how runes were used. I loved that element of history!
