What a year of loss. On April 4, 1968 Robert Kennedy used these moving words by the Greek dramatist Aeschylus to mark the horrific and untimely of the great civil rights leader Martin Luther King. On June 5 of that same year, Robert Kennedy was himself assassinated, and Aeschylus’ words are inscribed on his tomb.
“Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart,
until, in our own despair,
against our will,
comes wisdom
through the awful grace of God.”

Words can last a long time, right, Cathy?
There are a handful of people in history who I have read about extensively, RFK among them. I was far too young to remember him, although I have a very vague image of something on TV about his assassination.I was six years old when he was killed, but my library contains over a dozen books on his life and I am always on the look out for more.
The 60s were such turbulent times. I can’t imagine what the world thought to lose two great leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy so close together. It must have felt like everything was unraveling.
Bobby told several close aids while on the campaign trail that “there are guns between me and the white house.” Sadly, he was right.

I was a young girl, Mae– barely a teen. I stayed up all night listening to the news bulletins, hoping he would live. Remember news in those days was three channels. It was heartbreaking. His words about the guns between him and the White House sure were eerily prophetic. It’s remarkable and admirable that you have studied him so extensively.
I often wonder how the world history would have evolved if certain people hadn’t been removed/murdered by all kind of groups of interests. And things keep repeating as people’s memory is short and mistakes are made over and over again.
