JOANNA LUMLEY
One of my entertainment goals this week is to see the movie Absolutely Fabulous. The television show was hilarious and outrageous, and being with Patsy (Joanna Lumley) and Eddy (Jennifer Saunders) again will be a treat. I also fondly remember Joanna Lumley in her pre-Patsy Stone days as Purdey in The New Avengers.
The Avengers original 1960’s rendition, starring Patrick MacNee as British secret agent John Steed and Diana Rigg as the indomitable Mrs. Peel, was one of my top tv shows as a kid. I had missed out on his previous women partners, including Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale, but watched all I could find years later. Though heartbroken when Mrs. Peel left the show and was replaced by Linda Thorson as Tara King, I still watched of course. Mrs. Peel didn’t leave before instructing Tara how to correctly stir Steed’s cup of tea! Yes, I can still spout out all these names without looking them up. I was obsessed with The Avengers I tell you.
Years after The Avengers went off the air, it was reborn in 1976 in the form of The New Avengers. Steed was now mentor to two rambunctious young secret agents, mod styled Purdey played by Joanna Lumley and Mike Gambit played by Gareth Hunt. Although missing the sexy sizzle of Steed’s pairing with a lone woman, the show was still sheer delight. I never forgot Joanna Lumley and was thrilled in the 1990’s to see her in the irreverent and zany British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.
What summer movies are you planning to see? Will you check out Absolutely Fabulous?
Cheers & Happy Reading!
Flossie Benton Rogers, Conjuring the Magic in Romance
I sort of remember the Avengers, but I don’t recall the New Avengers at all. So weird, since that came after. I do remember a huge secret agent craze going on in the mid 60s. It was so much fun.
The new Star Trek movie is on my summer viewing list. I still have to get to the theater!
Oh yes, The Avengers, Man from UNCLE, all those super spies!
I haven’t heard of Absolutely fabulous. I don’t go to theaters much as we have to drive at least 21 miles to one We did go see the new Tarzan and i loved it. Enjoy your show
I also want to see Tarzan!
