This four-generational photo is my grandmother, my mother, my son, and me—taking the picture! We lost my grandmother in 1980 and my mother in 1987. I’m so glad my son got to know them. Today he is a loving husband and father and a man admired by family and friends. My husband Ronnie and I always doted on our son. He will forever be the light of our life. I know he was influenced in a positive way by my fabulous, hard working mother, my gracious grandmother, and also my devoted sister, Marcella. He’s had some resplendent ladies in his life, including his delightful wife–the best daughter-in-law ever–and her own lovely mother.
Do you remember the first time you made breakfast for your mother on Mother’s Day? I remember making toast and buttering it for her. It wasn’t breakfast in bed because, owning a restaurant that opened at 6am, she was always up by the time the rooster crowed. Of course in school my class had drawn and colored hearts and flowers the previous day, and I’m sure all the mothers had those displayed on refrigerators all over town. Disappointingly, I never could get my hearts to appear all fluffy. They were always just a little tilted. Mama loved them nonetheless. That’s what mothers do.
Whether you are a mother, have a mother, or know someone who fills the loving lady role for you, let your loved ones know how much you care. Take care of them and cherish them. Happy Mother’s Day!
