Television in 1959 thrummed with exciting cowboys and private eyes, as well as comedic bumblers and the unfortunates trapped in the dim recesses of The Twilight Zone. In honor of my husband’s birthday on January 15, let’s look back at one of his favorite television shows from when he was a kid in 1959. Long before Dirty Harry or his tenure as a renowned director, Clint Eastwood starred as Rowdy Yates in a popular television western called Rawhide.
Rawhide revolved around a group of drovers, or cowboys who herded cattle over rough, dangerous territory from one location to another. Eric Fleming played the trail boss, Gil Favor, with Eastwood’s Rowdy Yates as his impetuous second in command. Gil and Rowdy inevitably became embroiled in the lives of various people along the way. The time period was the tumultuous 1860’s, and storylines often referred to tragedies during and after the War Between the States.
My sister Marcella and I also watched Rawhide. She liked Gil Favor, and I preferred Rowdy Yates. Little did I know that my future husband was sharing my thoughts and watching the same show. Here’s to you, Ronnie! In those last hours of the nickel coke, lift your 6 ounce glass bottle to the old times of 1959. You might even add peanuts before drinking it, as my sister and I used to do.
This was a bit before my time, but I’ve caught a couple of repeats. I remember being shocked that “Dirty Harry” was in an old western the first time I saw it, LOL. I love old westerns and old TV. Some of my favorites are from the 60s and 70s 🙂
So do I, Mae. Which shows from back then do you like?
I’m a fan of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Five fingers, Lancer, Bonanza and Starsky and Hutch among others. I also liked a lot of the silly comedies like Green Acres, F-Troop and Bewitched, among many others.TV was so simple and innocent then!
Oh I remember Lancer with Wayne Maunder. We watched some of those shows too. I don’t remember Five Fingers. Other favorites of mine were The Avengers and Star Trek.
Loved Wayne Maunder! I didn’t discover the show until 2001 but became addicted. Was also a huge ST fan. You’ve got great taste, Flossie 😀
I’m scared to watch some of the shows people talk about now because of fear of becoming addicted to them. I don’t need another passion on my plate. I already love Supernatural, and my guilty pleasure is Pretty Little Liars. I could get over PLL if I could just figure out who “A” is lol.
