Tuesday Tales: Writing Sunny

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring authors posting writing excerpts from works in progress based on word and picture prompts. Keep in mind that the snippets are unedited. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s word prompt is sunny. Enjoy the other talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

When Roy’s questions veered into Naomi’s finances, a coughing fit overtook Curtis. His face turned an unbecoming shade of purple.

Roy held up a palm. “Calm down, pal, or I’ll have to call the paramedics.”

“I don’t—I don’t…you’re acting like…” His words spluttered into another strangled spurt.

An officer appeared at the back door, motioning to Roy.

“Look, Curtis, sit here and catch your breath. I’ll be back in a minute.”

After a quick consult with the officer, Roy pulled me aside. “Time to hit the road, Peri. I’ll be taking Curtis in for further questioning. He looks like he’s going to bust a gut here.”

“I have paperwork to catch up on. I could sit in my car and…”

“No. Do it at home. Then come to the station at four this afternoon, and we’ll go over your statement again.”

As I rounded toward the front through the ox-eye daisies, a raindrop hit my nose. I looked up. Gloomy gray clouds raced above, having displaced the earlier white puffs. Glisten’s sunny day had flown out the window.

A man ran by, knocking me of my feet and against the wall. An officer chased behind him. By the time I got to my feet, brushed myself off, and retraced my steps to the back door, the man had Curtis by the throat. “You low down, double crossing polecat!” Curtis shook him off, and they fell on the floor, brawling.

Roy pulled them apart, lifting and placing a heaving Curtis back in his chair, while the officer took hold of the other man. “Hold it! Sorry, sir, he ran out before…”

Roy’s face made it clear he didn’t want to hear an excuse, at least right now.

I studied the heaving man, thinking I had seen him somewhere before.
