Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring diverse authors posting excerpts from their works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I continue to regain stamina and slowly get back into the swing of things, after a major medical event. I’m so pleased you can join me today, This week’s word prompt is sour. My snippet is from a new paranormal piece. Enjoy the other authors at Tuesday Tales.
Cradling the quartz crystal against her chest, Dru freed a hand to pluck a sour orange on her way back inside. The peels worked so nicely to freshen the kitchen. She found both cats already snoring in lala land. The sleek beauty Onyx had chosen a half filled laundry basket, and fluffy Snowball was tucked into an antique crochet cubby. With care, Dru rinsed the moon charged crystal and placed it on a paper towel to dry. There was a lot more to do before the beautiful implement could serve her purpose, but first she had to see about supplies.
After dressing, she drove the few blocks to the downtown square and parked in front of one of the quaint brick shops. Years ago when her great grandparents had lived here it had been a drugstore run by a founding family. Now it was Luna’s Garden, a sundry shop of sorts, advertising as specializing in scented candles, incense, and other metaphysical goodies.
The shops on the square tended to come and go. Dru had only been in this one once since it opened, a few months ago while inventory was being moved in. Now she found her eyes didn’t know what to light on. The shelves were lined with mysterious notions and potions. It all looked so enticing. The front room was narrow but long, and uplifting curls of high quality incense wafted sweetly to her nostrils.
Scanning for signage, she made her way to a twirling rack of incense and selected several packets, some for meditation and some for every day. Now for what she had really come for—essential oils to enhance her spell. Oh, there they were—behind the serving counter. She leaned forward and squinted to read the tiny labels.
An older woman with gorgeous upswept silver hair and bone structure to die for swept from the back through the curtains. “May I help you find what you need?”
Dru smiled, immediately taken by her grey eyes—so shining they could be called silver—and the musical timbre of her voice. “Well, I—the fact is, I’m looking for an oil to attract—to bring together—kind of a love spell.” Biting her lip, she hurried on. “Maybe jasmine or ylang ylang? Or do you have a blend of such a thing?
