Tuesday Tales: Writing Jar

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring authors posting excerpts from works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s word prompt is jar. Enjoy the other talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

I knew Dulcy had a mean streak but didn’t realize her venom toward Opal ran so deep. Her dissing me wasn’t surprising. She didn’t seem to care for anyone under the age of forty. I was in a bit of a quandary though. I pondered for a minute. Gage had reminded me to keep any intel and theories to myself and not go blabbing. After all, you never know where a murderer might turn up. It would be foolish to let Dulcy know I had seen into her heart, so to speak. But neither was I about to backtrack and slink away. An answer popped into my head. Lord, I hope the light bulb that went off hadn’t shone onto the Tollivers’ front porch. Reaching into my bag, I pulled out earbuds and inserted them. My stepmother’s admonitions to be seen and not heard were about to take on a whole new meaning.

I got an extra thrill of satisfaction at Dulcy’s startled expression when she saw me rising like Dracula up her porch steps. I was sure all the blood had left her face, but it was hard to tell in the chartreuse cast of the yellow bug light. She jerked to her feet, mumbling something, and knocked over the cute decoupage mason jar she’d been sipping from.

Earl rose, too, not as abruptly, and pulled a rag from his back pocket to sop up the mess. He did a good job except for a couple of bits of pineapple .

Dulcy was still mumbling. I made a great show of tucking back my hair and removing the earbuds, leaving them hanging around my neck. Faint sounds of Ode to Joy could be heard. “So sorry, did you say something? It was just getting to the good part.”

Dulcy sat down with a plop.

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt jar. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other amazing excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

  1. Love the line about Dracula! And the way she gets over on Dulcy. Gave me a chuckle. And I loved the attitude here, in spades!

  2. I love Ode to Joy!! I’m humming it now. And this line is so evocative: but it was hard to tell in the chartreuse cast of the yellow bug light.

    So lovely! Jillian

  3. OMG! I love the heroine and her quick thinking! And know she knows information she wasn’t supposed to. I can’t see where it goes. Great job!
