Tuesday Tales: Writing Greasy

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring diverse authors posting excerpts from their works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s word prompt is greasy. My snippet is from a medieval romance featuring a knight and an intrepid lady. I’m excited to work in my favorite reading genre. Enjoy the other authors at Tuesday Tales.

The guests seated on the dais had quieted, no doubt in deference to their rumbling stomachs. He grunted in chagrin as he acknowledged the rather noisy, hollow predicament of his own belly. A few months home had readjusted his body to expect the nourishment of well-timed meals. He was restive as to whether this changed environment was any improvement. After all, a soldier had to be prepared, ready on the spur for anything. He was doing fine for the moment, but who knew what lay ahead with the situation as it was? Yet, he’d take it, God’s blood, over the horrors  of the Holy Land.

A soft hand on his forearm called him back from the dark memories that seemed to always loom about, ready to pull him him in. Alis had returned from her conference with the maid. “Come, my lord, I am like to starve if we do not at once join the others.”

An unlikely possibility spoken to set him at ease, he was certain. How was it she seemed to know his moods? He offered a reassuring smile, and she led the way toward the dais. The curvature of her back provided an enticement to further dispel any dark clouds.

Starting at the head of the table with the lord, a trio of servants saw to the guests. A servant set about the task of cutting the trenchers, while another followed to ladle in today’s fare of savory stew. A third poured wine, leaving the jug near the lord, whose countenance was already in high blood.

He noted her choice of seat was as far from her uncle as she could manage without making a fuss of it. There was just enough room for him to squeeze in beside her. Soon he was enjoying the fare, rabbit he thought, somewhat greasy but adequately seasoned and quite filling.

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt greasy. Thanks for stopping by. Return to Tuesday Tales.

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. Great snippet! I wondered what he’d be eating. Never had rabbit and always been curious about it. But I like bunnies to much to eat them.
