A sucking sensation pulled at the region of her belly, and the resulting dizziness swamped her. As her vision blurred, the wisps flowing in the moonlight morphed into vibrant, molten gold and seemed to stretch out forever. The world tilted on its axis. The wet sand slid from beneath the soles of her feet, and the ground appeared a vast distance away.
She toppled over and landed hard on her bottom, dropping the red candle. The cold sea water gurgled foamy tendrils up onto her chest beneath her corset top, and her teeth chattered. She slid the pulsating ruby ring onto her finger before mama ocean claimed it. Struggling against the waves, she managed to stand. Soaked to the skin, she needed the towel in her rucksack. She patted her velvet pouch to make sure it was still tied to her waist and tucked inside her skirt. Pray Hecate the items inside were dry.
Exasperated at the fizzled spell, she pulled at the now sodden skirt. It weighed her down even though the material was lightweight. Bejeebus. What kind of witch got vertigo while chanting a moon spell for Samhain?
Leaving water droplets in her wake, she trod toward the wooden railing where she had left her sandals and canvas rucksack. Not seeing them, she dug a penlight from her pocket and flicked it on. Frowning, she gazed around, baffled as to who might have swiped her belongings. She bent to search among the tall grass stalks she hadn’t noticed before. “Ouch!” A sharp rock abraded her wrist. The world wobbled, making her stomach churn. Drawing in a deep breath, she flattened her palms on her abdomen and sought to calm herself.
“Witch, what magic is this?” The deep male voice sent shivers skittering up her spine.
