Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring diverse authors posting excerpts from their works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s word prompt is colorful. My snippet is from a medieval romance featuring a knight and a lady caught in times of turmoil and war. I’m excited to work in my favorite reading genre. Enjoy the other authors of Tuesday Tales.
The chamber was as colorful as thrice dead sedge. Alis longed for a door, a window, a crevice through which she could see the outside world. She loosed the fabric about her neck and continued to pace.
Reese looked up from the goodly number of maps and diagrams he had been pouring over. “What has you in such ill humor, lady?”
The look she bestowed was not overly kind. “A need for fresh air. I’d like to take a turn outside, if you do not mind accompanying me?”
He resumed studying the documents before him. “I have work to do.”
His offhand dismissal was too much. She flounced toward the door.
To her disbelief, he moved and was there before her. “What do you think you are you doing?”
Her heart raced, but she refused to be cowed by the huge lunk of knight. She straightened to her full height, and then looked up at him. “I am going for a walk.”
His eyes narrowed. “Knowing the danger on our tail that likely lurks outside these walls even now, you would be so unwise?”
She felt for the dagger beneath her gown. “I can protect myself.”
His expression turned scoffing, and he gently ushered her away from the door. “From the likes of Harbottle’s men? I think not. You must cease these foolhardy notions.”
Her eyes flashed. “I was but planning to summon Aldric to accompany me to the portico, not venture into the depths of Ash Wood.”
He shoved a chair against the door, as if it would bar her, and resumed his seat. “Have you forgotten we are to stay out of sight of the brothers? I vow they are already suspicious of the boy’s comings and goings. Now cease your ill temper and allow me to work.”
Thwarted by his cool logic, she crossed her arms and turned away to stare at the wall. Father Michael’s warning about staying out of sight sounded in her head. Reese was merely being cautious. She was behaving in an unreasonable fashion, and she knew it, but her restlessness made her bones ache and his manner was infuriating.
He rustled papers. “Has your fit abated?”
She swung around. “I do not have fits!”
His sigh reverberated in the chamber. “Come here, Alis.”
She blinked several times. “What?”
“I said come here.” He pointed at the papers spread about. “Assist me in sorting these.”
I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt colorful. Thanks for stopping by. Return to Tuesday Tales.
Cheers & Happy Reading!
