Tuesday Tales: Writing Cocktail

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring diverse authors posting excerpts from their works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I’m pleased you stopped by today. This week’s picture prompt is cocktail. My snippet is from #7 in the Wytchfae series. It is a paranormal fantasy romance featuring the rebellious half-sister of the three Greek Fates. Enjoy the other authors of Tuesday Tales.

Still half asleep, Resa slid open the screen of her beachside tiki bar. If she was lucky, customers would give her business a wide berth until late afternoon. Or maybe if they were lucky. She was in no mood for witty chit chat. She was in no mood for anything but a couple more hours sleep. Her stomach grumbled, reviving the memory of last night’s abundance of fireball shooters. Too many generous customers. She would have to learn how to fake a shot.  Ugh cinnamon. Never again!

A sparkle of garnet colored light flared on the palm of her hand. Her eyes narrowed. What the hell? It was a nice Florida morning, not the witching hour. The blotch expanded and contracted in bone jarring blasts, obliterating the sight of the straw roof, the glittering sea, and the guileless azure sky.  She squeezed her eyes shut and clamped her muscles tight to settle the whoosh in her stomach. The unexpected arrival of one of her powerhouse siblings from the Underworld tended to give her that reaction. The trio of sisters wasn’t called Weird for nothing. Damn it!

The jeweled light ceased its jittering to settle around her like a bubble. Although she still held onto the rim of the counter, the stonework edging rough under her thumb, it had temporarily vanished along with everything else except her and the unwelcome visitor. The image materialized. She looked up at the only goddess she knew with garnet sparkled eyes.

Lachen and her leopard drawn chariot. The middle born of the Darkness had deigned to visit.

Rowrrr!  One of the leopards mewled his irritation. Lachen leaned forward to stroke both their tawny pelts, before twining the reins around an obsidian knob. “Never mind that cross draft, darlings. We’re here now. Well done.” Her penetrating gaze slid to Resa, and she extended long, bejeweled fingers.

Reaching up to receive the proffered hand, Resa touched her forehead to the bony knuckles. “Welcome, sis. I guess there’s a first time for everything.”

“Don’t be impudent. Climb up where I can see you.”

Resa boarded the chariot, noticing how the over the top design matched the personality of its driver. She glared at the sister known as She Who Measures. “Why are you here?”

Lachen studied the sign advertising this week’s drink specials. Her lips twitched. “It’s after five back home. I dropped by for a Sex on the Beach.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the picture prompt cocktail. Thanks for popping in. Return to Tuesday Tales.

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. Really? You went through all that for a drink? LOL. I think the interaction between the sisters is going to be priceless. Looking forward to it. Nice use of the word prompt.
