Tuesday Tales: Writing Chocolate Cake

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, a weekly blog featuring diverse authors posting excerpts from their works in progress based on word and picture prompts. I continue to get back into the swing of things after a medical scare. I’m so pleased you can join me today. This week’s picture prompt is a delectable chocolate cake. Wouldn’t it go fine with a cup of coffee? My snippet is from a new paranormal piece. Enjoy the other authors at Tuesday Tales.

Dumbstruck at the news of the breakup, Dru fell silent as the other friends plied Jena with outraged exclamations and consoling words.

“Thanks, guys. I don’t want to talk about it.” Jena swallowed, lip quivering.  “Not yet. For now, let’s just enjoy the day.”

To change the subject, Dru blurted, “Anyone want to ride to the market in Floral City with me tomorrow?”

Lin took the hint and backed off. “I’ll undoubtedly be lying in bed, still exhausted from today’s excursion.”

Glory gave Jena’s shoulders a final squeeze and bent down to resume her energetic hunt for purple stones. “What do you need from the market?”

Dru was relieved to see everyone fiddling with dirt and rocks. Jena would share the truth of what had happened when the time was right for her. “Strawberries for my family reunion next weekend.”

“Oh, you’re making the famous Dobbs strawberry cake?” Lin’s face had lit up like a Christmas bulb. “I thought that job was in the hands of the aunts.”

“Oh my gosh, I wouldn’t attempt to create Aunt Myrtle’s classic. I’m baking a different cake—luscious chocolate topped with fresh strawberries.”

“That’s dangerous, Dru.” Glory’s serious expression turned playful. “You should definitely give it a trial run during the week. We’d be happy to help you out.  Right, girls? Tasting party at Dru’s Wednesday night? Chocolate cake washed down with sangria!”

Even Jena managed a slight smile, and the mining party became reinvigorated toward its purpose. For Dru it was to fill her gem basket with piles of honey hued calcite and then find a good sized quartz crystal in the gift shop. A new idea was beginning to take form.

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the picture prompt of the yummo chocolate cake. Thanks for stopping by. Return to Tuesday Tales.

  1. Now I want chocolate cake. Great snippet. I will be dropping in on their party. White sangria or red?

  2. WHAT??? You can’t stop there, you evil woman! What idea is forming in her head?? I want to know!
Great way to use the chocolate cake as a distraction in your scene. Great job!
