Tuesday Tales 2026-2-24 Heart

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, powered by a small group of authors, where word prompts inspire passages in the books we’re writing. The word of the day is heart. This week’s excerpt is from Incarnations, in which deities discover what it’s like to live as human. When you finish, make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

“You must come with me to the fire circle!” Rowan said excitedly. We’ll be celebrating the lengthening of days. I wouldn’t be surprised if the priestess selects you to open one of the cardinal directions for the circle.”

Ione inhaled a quick, startled breath. “What does that entail?”

“Our group starts in the East. It’s like opening a door or portal to a higher reality. Some people have deities or symbols that they associate with each direction, but it’s not necessary. If she calls you and you feel moved to join in, just open your heart and let the words come to you. Don’t worry. Spirit will speak.”

“But why would the priestess pick me? I’ve never attended here before. Or anywhere.” Ione’s eyes drifted to the side. Was that true? She couldn’t remember ever having participated in such a ritual. Yet, something was familiar about it. Maybe she’d seen it in a dream.

“Because you are a natural,” Rowan answered. “You just don’t realize it yet.”

Rowan talked some more about the fire circle, explaining what the priestess would do and defining some of the unique words specific to the actions.

Ione found herself fascinated. “What was it you called the cleansing walk?” Ione asked.

“Widdershins,” Rowan said. “It’s an old word meaning counterclockwise.”

Adhering to her resolution to be more outgoing and sociable, Ione told Rowan she would go with her.

About twenty-five people gathered in the field at dusk. A small fire, scented with sage and cedar, crackled low within a ring of protective stones. Everyone stood in a loose circle around the fire. Some were silent, but many talked together quietly, keeping their voices low. The priestess, wearing a quartz crystal point around her neck, stood with her eyes closed and head slightly tilted. Ione whispered to Rowan. “She’s already in a trance, isn’t she?”

Rowan seemed pleased with her perception. “Yes, spirit is with her.”

Finally, the priestess opened her eyes and smiled. She welcomed everyone and gave a brief rundown of what would come: cleansing, singing, opening the circle by means of the cardinal directions, messaging, more singing, gratitude, closing the circle, and snacks for grounding. “First we’ll cleanse our sacred space.” The priestess began walking to the left, behind and around everyone.

“Widdershins,” Ione whispered to herself.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed the selection inspired by the word heart. If you haven’t done so already, check out the other excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

Cheers & Happy Reading!
