Welcome to Tuesday Tales, powered by a small group of authors, where word prompts inspire passages in the books we’re writing. Today’s word is stir. This snippet is from a cozy mystery set in fictional Glisten, Georgia. When you finish reading, make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.
“Oh, Robin, all hell has broken loose. Luella has to go in for more questioning, and Roy advised me to get her a lawyer.”
Her eyes widened in shock. “It’s that serious?”
“Apparently, it may be. He sounded deadly serious. He won’t be in on the session. They’re making her go to the Sheriff’s station in Blairsville. Roy said he heard that a witness has come forward. Have you heard scuttlebutt about it?”
“No! Oh, why did Luella have to go and stir the pot with Vonna?”
“He didn’t know any details. If you do hear any rumors about the witness, call me, will you?”
“Of course.”
“Who should I get? Clive Hawtrey is the only attorney I know who has done work for Jack.”
She shook her head. “He’s for taxes and estate planning.” After thinking for a moment, she said, “I’d call the Shoemakers, Otis and Clancy. It’s a brother and sister team that specializes in defense. A friend of mine used them when she was unfairly accused of theft. They’ve handled a couple of high profile cases, too. They’re not twins but are a year apart or something like that, on the high side of forty I’d say, energetic, and complement each other. What one doesn’t know, the other can find out. Their office is one street over from the Square, toward the library.”
I thanked her and decided to drive on to the Shoemakers’ office instead of calling. Within an hour Clancy Shoemaker had called the Sheriff’s station, demanding a postponement of any interview until she had conferred with her client. She notified the authorities that she would be front and center in any further questioning of Luella Wyler. I texted Luella that I had hired help and the help would be at Tea Thyme to talk to her before this afternoon’s interview session.
Because I had to stop by the store for a few personal items, Luella and Clancy Shoemaker were in the sitting room, conferring, when I arrived back at the inn. I continued into the kitchen for coffee, leaving them their privacy. A lot of hammering and bustling noises intruded from the workers outside, and I hoped it didn’t impair the lawyer’s concentration or frazzle Luella even more.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed the piece inspired by the word stir. If you haven’t done so already, check out the other excerpts at Tuesday Tales.
Cheers & Happy Reading!

Love the name Clancy for a woman. Great post.
I love when names pop into my head. So often it’s the opposite– a laborious quest of what fits and sounds right.
Great pacing in this part of the story. I also like how you introduced the brother – sister lawyers.
Thanks, Loretta! Glad you like the pacing here.
Sounds like this is the next needed step. But yikes that it came to this point of needing an attorney. Good snippet!
I know, always scary, right?
Great thinking on Robin’s part! I love the lawyer duo and how they took charge from the get-go. Great job!
Thanks, Tricia! I enjoyed Clancy’s take on things.
Things are heating up. The presence of a lawyer makes everything much more serious. Seems like things will be coming to a head soon. Can’t wait!! Is Luella innocent? Guess I’ll to wait to find out.
