Tuesday Tales 2024-3-26 Silvery

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, powered by a small group of authors, where word prompts inspire passages in the books we’re writing. Today’s word is silvery. My snippet is from a cozy mystery set in fictional Glisten, Georgia. When you finish reading, make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

I swallowed the last spicy bite of my pulled pork sandwich. “I like the way Maddie Max toasts the buns.”

“So do I,” Robin seconded, and reached for a fry. Roy nodded, his mouth full of barbecue.

I peered into my tea glass. “I need more ice. Anyone else?”

Vicky stood, eyeing the drinks on the table. “We all do. I’ll go with.”

In the kitchen we filled an oversized silvery tumbler with enough crushed ice to replenish all our glasses. “Roy can go home with you tonight,” I told her. “He doesn’t have to babysit me and Robin.”

“He is concerned about both of you,” she said, giving me a stern look.

“Because I found the body?”

“Because there WAS a body, and very close to here. Because a murderer is on the loose. I know Luella seems loyal to Jack. Still, she’s apt to be viewed as a suspect.” She flipped a palm. “Why don’t you come and stay with us until it’s all sorted out.”

I smiled. “He put you up to this.”

“If he hadn’t, I would have anyway.”

I glanced aside and then met her gaze, managing a smile. “I appreciate the offer, but this is–was my home. You know everybody in town. Who hated her that much?” I was reluctant to say the victim’s name, afraid she might pop out of the ethers and demand I get busy.

She shrugged. “Girlfriends. Wives. Mothers. She was subtle about it, but she went after what she wanted, regardless of who stood in the way.” She looked thoughtful. “Some people keep their feelings hidden until…” She snapped her fingers. “Seriously, Peri, you must be careful.”

I nodded energetically as I moved toward the door. “Absolutely.”

“Wait, we need whipped cream for the dessert. Is there any?”

Turning at the half-opened door, I said, “I don’t know. Peek in the fridge.”

It took her only a moment to find the tall, red can. By the time we returned to the table, Roy was chowing down on an apple fritter. He squirted the other half with a mountain of whipped cream, and we all laughed at the mess he was making, especially of his face.

“Hon,” Vicky admonished, shoving a stack of napkins toward him.

“You should have been at the meeting yesterday, Vicky,” Robin said, as she reached into the bag for a turnover.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed the piece inspired by the word silvery. If you haven’t done so already, check out the other excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. Well done. I’m sure the victim had lots of enemies, especially if she flirted with all the men in town. Great image of Roy with the whipped cream all over his face.

  2. Love this little slice of life– and the slice with the whipped cream. And boy, do I love a good pulled pork sandwich. Now I need food. LOL. Jillian

  3. Interesting to get this tidbit of information about her being a flirt. Also I’m wondering why Vicky thinks Peri is in danger. Doesn’t seem like she necessarily have any specially incriminating info about the murderer or even know who it was. And now I want an apple fritter or turnover or both! Great snippet.

  4. It seems that the list of suspects is going to be a very long one!
Great way to work in the word prompt. This was a great scene. I felt like I was standing in the doorway watching it all transpire.

  5. Love the breakdown of the case between them. And between the sandwiches at the beginning and the fritters at the end, now I am hungry! Great job!
