It’s time for Tuesday Tales, with authors writing excerpts based on word or picture prompts. This is picture prompt week, and I chose the frisky dog above. My snippet is from a cozy mystery. Visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.
Gage helped me spread a blanket on the ground and then a red checked cloth to lay out the food. With the sun shining and yellow flowers blooming all around us, the dogs romped and played while we unpacked the baskets.
He set out a bottle of Shiraz and two glasses, filled them, and handed me one.
I took a sip. “I know you didn’t find that in Glisten.” I leaned over and pecked him on the cheek. His minty scent and the scruff of his five o’clock made me want to linger. Instead, I took a breath and continued unpacking. Somehow it was important to prolong our lighthearted mood as long as possible.
“Well, my girl, what do you think about this?” From the basket he extracted a batch of fried chicken and buttery biscuits.
I stared, my mouth watering. “Where on earth did you get those?”
“Old Missus Murphy over the ridge. I was checking on her nephew’s short wave equipment and mentioned you and I were going on a picnic. She insisted this would put me at the head of the line.”
He handed me a biscuit. I took a bite, and the buttery goodness overloaded my taste buds. I followed it with another sip of wine. “There’s no line, but if there were, you would be at the head.”
He took my glass, set it down, and put a warm hand on each side of my face. The kiss was both tender and passionate. My arms went around his neck.
After a few moments, he whispered, his lips close to my ear, “Peri, I need to tell you…”
I shushed him with two fingers. “I know. I know, Gage. You got the call, dammit. I wish you didn’t have to go.”
I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the picture prompt dog. Thanks for stopping by. Check out the other authors at Tuesday Tales.

What a lovely scene! Nice cliffhanger, too. Well done.
Thank you for stopping by and commenting, Susanne. Love those cliffs.
A perfectly set scene, Flossie, and nice use of the picture prompt!
Thanks so much, and why does he have to go? *sobs* If this was a romance instead of a mystery, he wouldn’t be going anywhere.
Oh no! What call? Darn it. Cliffhanger. You are certainly an expert at writing lovely scenes, and then stabbing me with a cliffhanger at the end. Well done!!
Hahaha love those cliffs! Thank you, Jean!
I agree with the others – you are the master at cliff hangers.
Loved this scene!
Thanks, Trisha. Just seemed a good place.
Love the kiss! A little heartbroken about his news. Great job!
Me, too! Why can’t he stay??
