Time for Tuesday Tales! Here you’ll find entertaining excerpts from a group of hard-working writers. This week’s picture inspiration is broth. My work in progress is a medieval romance featuring a knight and lady. After reading the passage, make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.
Weariness had set into her very bones. Only a fierce determination to reach her uncle’s and Nicholas’ agreement to accompany her that far kept her going. What else could she do? She was not about to give up and wed the loathsome Rothburg.
The ride from the ruined keep had been a long one, and much had happened during the endless miles. Now that the troupe had veered west toward Barlow to fulfill a standing commitment for five separate performances, she had not the solace of her dear Ada. Only Nicholas was her constant now. His warmth and nearness, and certitude of action, gave her strength. If only he would not ride on once they reached her uncle’s. She wished… Eyes drooping, she allowed her head to fall against his chest for a few moments of rest.
Startled, she woke to sounds of people and activity. The knight’s arms were around her, possibly to keep her from falling off Champion. She bolted upright and swiped at her eyes. They were already tearing at the bright afternoon sun. “Forgive me. I did not mean to fall asleep so soundly. I trust I was not a burden.”
Nicholas leaned forward, his tone solicitous. “Fret not. You could ne’er be such. Aye, you rested for a short time, but fitfully. On the far side of this town is a public house in which I have previously stayed. The mistress is known for a tolerable bread and broth. You ate little this dawn. We shall stop for food and drink and to rest a few hours before continuing.”
“Very well.” She inhaled deeply and told herself to relax. If anyone knew how to evade an enemy, it would be Nicholas. She found ease in the steady clip-clop of the horse across the cobblestones.
I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt broth. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other remarkable excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

That can be a lovely sound, rhythmic. Thanks, Susanne.
As exquisite as always, Flossie. I love the closeness of these characters, and Nicholas’s solicitousness.
