I continue here with an adventurous medieval romance featuring a knight. This week’s word prompt is glass. Make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.
With the sun dipping low in the sky, the group stopped for the night to set up camp in the close formation as Nicholas had insisted. As a precaution, Nicholas sent Randall to circle back once more on the quiet. He wanted to make sure no unwanted followers were on their trail. He then set about tending Champion.
The leader of the players approached. “Sir Nicholas, you will be pleased to know the wagon cover is mended.”
After the exquisite torment of being but a heartbeat from Sabina all day, relief mixed with regret swept over Nicholas. The heather scent of her hair still filled his nostrils. “’Tis welcome news and to be gladly received by the ladies, I am certain.”
“I wager so. Lady Sabina will be able to ride more restfully. Likewise, my Ada will not have to contend with such a stubborn chore as was today required of her.”
“My compliments to your wife.” Nicholas surveyed the group. “Your band seems more subdued than I would have expected, Everard. Is my attendance at fault?”
Everard took a breath before he replied. “They are not used to being under guard, my lord. I told them ’tis a welcome price for having taken the notice of Sir Wycliffe of York. ”
Nicholas nodded and resumed currying. “He is well esteemed for his favor toward religious mysteries. Your group will benefit from his patronage.”
Everard continued. “I expect one or two of the band also object to my allowing the presence of Lady Sabina. They are accustomed to Ada and mind her not. In fact they have come to appreciate her care and talents. Somehow, though, their sodden noggins have gotten the odd notion as to how the Lady is the one under guard and we but a handy cover of sorts.”
Nicholas met Everard’s steady gaze with a scoffing smile. “Indeed. I suppose such vagary from a group of fanciful revelers is to be expected. Let us do all we can to set their minds at ease and assure an uneventful journey.”
Everard nodded and headed toward the campfire.
As Nicholas praised Champion for service well provided, a streak from the lowering sun glinted on his tunic. He lifted a small object between his thumb and forefinger—a round of blue glass, likely from the Lady’s neck chain.

Great scene. That actor is wiser than I expected.
Alert little cuss, isn’t he? Thanks!
Great detail at the end and unique way to use the word prompt. Soooo, she marked him, sort of, right? Too bad they wouldn’t be riding so closely anymore. I loved that. Loved the slow build of sexual tension. I hope it’s going to continue. I’m so enjoying this story. And looking forward to Nicholas getting a little more up close and personal with Sabina.
I’m glad you liked their riding together. Thanks for your supportive comments!
Wonderful excerpt!
Thanks!
“sodden noggins” I love that! Jillian
Hahaha thanks, Jillian!
I love the language that you use. And I love how wise Everard is of his troupe. Great job!
I’m so glad you like the language, Tricia!
