It’s time for Tuesday Tales, with authors writing excerpts based on word or picture prompts. This week the word prompt is paint. My snippet is from a cozy mystery. Visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.
As it turned out, I didn’t go see Debra the next day. After Gage left I busied myself catching up on work for Spooky Jaunts. With the next segment coming up, the editing of the previous shoot needed to be completed. I had gotten a little behind on it and was determined not to let my only source of income slide by the wayside. With Squire’s will in limbo, who knew if I’d ever collect on his desire for me to take ownership of Douglas Hall.
Maybe I was secretly hoping the judge would return from his getaway, grant bail, and I wouldn’t have to visit her in the hoosegow again at all.
So it was Friday when I punched in the number for the jail and found that Debra had been transferred to the county facility. Apparently Captain Teason had determined Glisten Jail not fortified enough to hold such a cold blooded murderer.
“Really, Roy?” I complained. “What does he think Debra is going to do? Break out and go on the lam?”
He grunted wryly. “I wouldn’t put it past her. She managed to spin everyone’s head around while she was here.”
I sighed. “How?”
“Whining about the food and accommodations, crying, threatening to sue, demanding a new lawyer, constant yammering. Peri, that girl never shuts up.”
“She does when she sulks. Teason’s highhanded methods didn’t get her in the right mood.”
“Well, maybe she’s sulking now over at County, but she hiked up everybody’s blood pressure here. I think what finally broke the camel’s back was how she convinced Teason’s wife to sneak in a girl from Alma’s Salon to paint her damn nails.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “I bet Pearline ended up in the doghouse, too.”
“Oh, she did. You know how Teason can roar. And I’m pretty sure she’s barred from Alma’s for life.”
“That won’t last. Pearline will sidle back on Alma’s good side and out jab Teason, too, one way or another. Just watch.”
“You’re probably right.” He sounded puzzled. “You know, I was surprised she fell for your sister’s hijinks in the first place.”
I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word prompt paint. Thanks for stopping by. Check out the other authors at Tuesday Tales.
