4 Stars for TIME’S PENDULUM SWINGS AGAIN
Author – Joy M. Lilley
First Published – 2016
Genre – Romance
Setting – England
Heroine – Jenny, a British nurse
Hero – Seb, a Nepalese physician
Major Theme – Exploration of the complexities of a love relationship involving racial, cultural, and class differences, as well as emotional qualifiers such as deceit.
Descriptors – weighty emotional issues, distrust, forgiveness, arranged marriages, lengthy time period
Favorite Supporting Character – the mother, Gladys
Thoughts – This story is highly commendable in its exploration of the racial, cultural, and class differences between the two main characters. I love the way none of that mattered as far as their willingness to be a couple. I enjoyed seeing the way they acted when together but particularly was drawn to seeing each one’s private lives when they were apart. For me, a drawback of the book is that I never could form a liking for Seb, the male character. While we are told of the passion Jenny has for him, her reactions seem to focus on her distrust and dislike of the various things he says and does, small things as well as big things.
Memorable Line – I hated moustaches, because it seemed to be a symptom of bone idleness…
Final thought – Highly interesting story about a lifelong love relationship.
