The celebration of Lucina, the Roman goddess of light, occurs with the return of the sun’s power following Winter Solstice. At this point on the Wheel of the Year, light has defeated darkness, the new takes the place of the old, and the world begins to shuck off the stillness and hibernation of the winter season. This is the time we reevaluate our lives and form new goals and desires for the coming year. Lucina, with her golden luminosity aiding clarity of vision, comes to our assistance. Her crown of candles carries on to Saint Lucia, a most beloved patron saint. Closely affiliated with the Roman mother goddess Juno, Lucina also oversaw the labors of childbirth, protecting both mother and babe. Her affinity with the sun is highly interesting, in that she was at one time a moon goddess and affiliated with the powerful Diana. Here is another example of mythological correspondence and sharing of powers among deities of various names and locales. I love Lucina’s nickname of Little Light and the blessings she bestows. Do you feel a change this time of the year and, if so, how would you describe it?
