As the Wheel of the Year turns into midsummer, the energy of Cancer comes to the fore.  Concerns shift to the home, family, and our deepest roots. Cancer cherishes the sacred realm of the home. Children, both biological and creative, take center stage. In the atmosphere of Cancer, we may shell over for self protection against ultra sensitivity and hurt feelings, but our center is loyal, loving and nurturing. Cancer energy often touches upon unseen worlds, while still able to manage and create exquisitely in the physical world. The power of Cancer is to be caring and loyal to loved ones. I honor the Mayan goddess Ix Chel as 2015 patron goddess of Cancer.

Ix Chel is a powerful night riding goddess with the regenerative power of the snake and a cloak of invisibility at her disposal. Once when she was killed by a hurl of lightning, dragonflies sang her back to the land of the living. Her strength is that of the jaguar. She is a midwife goddess of pregnancy and childbirth. She is often depicted in her crone aspect as a wise older woman who guides a female through all the phases of life, particularly those related to the home. Home means not only one’s physical dwelling, but also the abode of the spirit – or the body, and the core self or indwelling spirit. Ix Chel portrays a woman at the center of a family unit and the vital nurturing that she provides. She is able to focus on daily needs as well as grander vistas and makes every moment count. Ix Chel is affiliated with the moon. She is the young girl, the ripe woman, and the grandmother. She has a watery, flowing quality about her, fluid boundaries, and fierce torrential power. She is the goddess of rain and the aftermath beauty of the rainbow. Although the meaning of her name is not agreed upon, it may be connected to the colors of the rainbow, especially red. Weaving is one of the primary gifts given to humanity by Ix Chel, and in ancient times the skill was highly revered. During a woman’s pregnancy and delivery, Ix Chel is by her side, tending to her needs with maternal grace. Renewal is her special power, one she shares in generous fashion.

May we all be blessed by the nurturing, regeneration, and focused creativity bestowed by Ix Chel.

  1. Likewise to the human world, I see all the goddesses are responsible of so many tasks. It either shows the men gods were lazier, or that goddesses were more capable than them.
Thank you for a great mythological post!

    1. I think you’ve got something there, Carmen. Research shows that during the rise of humankind in prehistory, women were instrumental in leaps that benefited civilization and culture, such as the advent of fire usage and pottery.

  2. I admit I don’t know the first thing about Mayan mythology, so this goddess was completely unfamiliar to me. It’s such an interesting culture steeped in mystery, so I really need to look into it more. Thanks for the introduction!

  3. Interesting I didn’t know of all these different cultures having different Goddesses thanks for enlightening us
