This variation on the hot tea toddy featured last week comes courtesy of friend Marcia S. Instead of cognac, a blended Canadian whiskey, Crown Royal, adds the smooth burn. This toddy will heat your blood, a handy trick considering the frigid temperatures we’ve been having of late. Note: use the blue Crown Royal drawstring bag for storing runes, tarot cards, or any manner of ladies’ trinkets.
Ingredients: 1 ounce Crown Royal, 1 tablespoon honey, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 1 cup of hot tea
Directions: Swirl the honey onto the bottom of a tea cup. Add the whiskey and lemon juice and then the steaming hot tea. Get that pinky finger up; Mama is watching!
This sounds like the recipe my grandmother used to give us when we had the croup. I don’t think it cured the raspy coughs, but we sure did sleep well.
My mom always swore by a similar recipe. In talking to a friend last night, she mentioned that our moms used to call it being “stove up.” A toddy is good for when you are “stove up.”
I remember that term. My dad was ‘stove up’ when the plow horse kicked him in the groin. Daddy really needed some of that ‘stove up’ medicine.
I bet he did, after being kicked by a horse!
