His heated gaze flowed around her, tamping down her irritation, transforming it into a swirl of heat low in her abdomen.

Her breath hitched in her throat.

A half smile played on his lips. “Then—after you, Garnet McAnna.”

“Finally.” She reached down to grab her cap and twisted her hair up beneath it. There was little choice but to fall in step beside him. He wasn’t going to leave her alone with this, and she couldn’t put off the task. She gave a start of surprise when he motioned her to walk ahead of him. To keep an eye on her, she supposed, tugging down her cap brim.

His powerful presence put her off kilter. Lord knows she had enough to be uneasy about already. She brushed her palm against the affirming weight of the snub-nose in her pocket. She’d proceed as if he weren’t here. Resuming her single-minded focus, she made her way on around the corner of the fence line and then set off toward the north. Use a compass in front of him? Not likely. Her fae sense of direction would work just fine.

After a while, her nose twitched at the earthy aroma of decaying vegetation. The swampier ground sucked at the soles of her boots, and her pace slowed. She spotted the sycamore and stopped. “This is it.”

Gabriel halted beside her. He flung out a hand and released a glowing shard of green light.

Garnet jumped.

The light elongated into a slender, taffy-like string that snuggled up against and caressed the aged tree.

“Damn it, what kind of fae creature are you?”

He ignored her question. “There is a portal here, but not an ancient one. Someone established it recently, obviously for secrecy’s sake. Your demon, I suppose.”

“He’s not my demon. I’m going to incapacitate him with the first slug, drag out the information about the familiars he abducted, and then fire a second shot. He’ll be nobody’s demon.”

He shook his head. “A bullet won’t stop Boros.”

  1. Though my memory isn’t what it used to be, I think I recognize this beautiful piece of fiction. Lord of Fire, isn’t it?
I enjoyed it so much. Hopefully you can republish it soon.
