He was too big. None of her opponents in beginner’s class had been of such a height, nor so brawny. In fact, practice pairings had consisted of other women of a size similar to her own. Her brain buzzed with a warning to remember her training. 360 defense. She should keep her arms up, but they had turned leaden. Yet her head was light. As light as a feather.

The blade slipped from her fingers and bounced to the ground.. Knives weren’t part of her training, but she had managed to draw blood. Not enough to actually hurt the outlaw, but she had seen surprise on his face. Her glance flicked to his eyes. He looked thunderous. So intense. What did he plan to do with her? What had they done with Thula? Her thoughts seemed scattered. Was she going into shock? She tried to feel her feet planted on the ground. The wind flapped her hair and clothing and wedged between her and the tree.

Another of the outlaws came running from behind the cottage, shouting at the giant, “Tor!”

The giant turned his head to answer. “Here! I have one! A mighty strange…”

Lana spurted sideways into a dead run. With hair whipping into her eyes, she made toward an opening in the trees. Footsteps thudded behind her. “Halt!” She could almost feel his breath on her neck. They would both be behind her, the giant and the other one.

If she could get past the trees and toward the back.

He shouted something, but the words were lost in the wind.

Too late she remembered the cliff’s edge. Covered in mist, there it was just before her. She veered left, trying to skirt it. Chalky ground crumbled beneath her feet. A hard body swooped into her. Steely arms wrapped around her middle, twisting her around, taking her into a bone jarring tumble. They spun and rolled. Then there was no ground beneath her.

They fell, jolting to an abrupt stop. Her lungs clawed for breath.

“Easy, lass.” The giant lay beneath her, his arms fierce around her. “Take it shallow.”

  1. Oh boy! I can feel her fear as she scrambles to figure out what to do. I can’t wait to read more about these two. Great job!

  2. First you scare me to death with great description, then you fool me because he’s a good guy. I remember him from the last snippet. Great story unfolding here. Can’t wait until she sees he’s okay.
