Tuesday Tales 2022-6-14 Bauble

Welcome to Tuesday Tales, where authors write weekly excerpts based on word and picture prompts. The prompt this week is bauble. When you finish reading my snippet, make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

Delphine twirled her finger, directing Lana to pirouette. “I’m glad you
took me up on my invitation.”

Lana complied, and then spread out her long dress for a curtsy. “How could I resist meeting my favorite 7th or 8th cousin?”

“You couldn’t. I’m pretty irresistible.”

Lana placed a hand on her cousin’s arm. “Seriously, though, your inviting me to bunk with you was a godsend. Not just for a place to stay, that’s amazing enough, but to show me the ropes over here. It means a lot.”

Delphine shook her head, smiling. “I’m thrilled you were tagged for the gig. It’s crazy we’ve been involved in sister city events for the last few years and just found out we’re distant cousins. Who would’ve thought? Thank heaven for genealogy.”

Lana nodded, staring into the distance “Right. Maybe there’s something to Gran’s ideas about timing and synchronicity.” She shrugged it off. “At any rate, when your city sends a person over my way for the next Gala, make sure it’s you, and my place—for what it’s worth—is absolutely yours.”

“I’ve already bent Tillie Robinson’s ear about it. The stipend will be
small, as yours is, but I’ll save money between now and then. If the schedule holds, it’ll be three years from now.” She wiggled her hips in a rumba move. “I have never been to your country.”

“I had never been to yours. It’s…” Lana gazed around, at a loss for words, “remarkable.”

Delphine dimpled and pulled a threaded needle from a tomato cushion. “We’re a mutual admiration society. Hold your arm up, will you, before you put on the shawl? I need to secure that top snap.” After finishing, she bent over the table to rummage in a jewelry box. “Colin Keene, wasn’t it, our mutual ancestor? And you’re determined to remain a Keene.”

“Yes, I like the name, though Gran says we also have Keith blood.”

Wait–you do?” Delphine looked up and frowned.

“So she says, though I haven’t found it in the family history
yet.”

“Well, no matter. That feud is ancient history.” She straightened
up, having found what she was looking for.

“What’s that?”

“A bauble from a second hand shop. It’s a replica of an old brooch. Just the thing for your outfit. Pin it on your shawl, and we’ll head toward The Square.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the word, bauble. Thanks for stopping by. Check out the other excerpts at Tuesday Tales.

  1. Great use of the word prompt. Love the conversation between these two, just getting to know each other. And yes…is there an old feud brewing? Great foreshadowing here and making sit on the edge of my seat waiting for more.

  2. A wonderful snippet! I enjoyed every word. I loved the interaction between the two and their talking family connections. And a possible family feud in the background? Even better!
