Tuesday Tales: 2021-2-16 Photo Forest

This is picture prompt week, and from a small group of photos, I chose the one of a forest. I continue here with an adventurous medieval romance featuring a knight. Make sure to visit all the talented authors of Tuesday Tales.

Pulling up on the reins, Sir Nicholas de Beaumont surveyed the chaos before him. He was too late. After a hard ride he had caught up with the travelers he was charged with protecting, only to see them under attack by armed men on horseback. The attackers surrounded the covered carts and shouted demands about women and valuables. Nicholas counted eight outlaws but couldn’t see the whole of the circumstance in the forest thicket. Two against eight, and one not yet a knight. Not the most auspicious odds, but he had no qualms about besting this ring of lowlifes. “Circle through the trees to the other side and come in behind them,” he instructed his squire.

Nicholas pegged the brawny man standing in the lead cart with reins in his hands and fire in his eyes as Everard, the manager of the traveling troupe of players. With legs apart, Everard glared at the three mounted, armed men directly before him. His voice rang out as if on stage. “Be gone with ye, villains! We are under the patronage of Sir Robert Throckmorton of Wycliffe Hall, making our way to perform in York’s midwinter holy days. We have no valuables among our meager possessions.”

The outlaws scoffed and guffawed, the most finely outfitted one proclaiming, “Big words there. I trust you will not mind if we see for ourselves. Everyone out of the carts! Out now!”

Nicholas’ eyes widened at the sight of two women among the group, both gray-haired matrons. They huddled together, surrounded by males who served as a barrier between them and those who threatened. He galloped into the fray and halted before the apparent leader. “You have no call to waylay these innocent travelers.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet based on the picture prompt forest. Thanks for stopping by. Read the other remarkable excerpts at Tuesday Tales.
