Mythic Monday: Rune of the Day – Raido

RaidoDivination is a way to focus on what matters. It allows us to gain insight into the ripe possibilities of the moment and is best used as a type of meditative effort. With their pictographic qualities and kinship with long ago cultures, runes are one of my favorite methods.

Over three thousand years ago, pictographs were carved into rocks and cliffs in Scandinavia. Two thousand years ago the runic alphabet came into use among Scandinavians and Germanic peoples such as the Anglo-Saxons. Runes were used for writing as well as for magical purposes.

From our bag of runes, we close our eyes draw a single stone as we ask a question: What do I need to know about [such and such situation]? If drawing on behalf of another, visualize that person. We must listen with open mind and heart.

Today we look at Raido, a rune that resembles our modern letter R. It is one of the eight runes of Freyr, the Norse god of virility, fertility, prosperity, and pleasure. From him came the kings of Scandinavia. Raido is part of the traditional Germanic Futhark or runic alphabet. Raido is primarily associated with communication and journeys. It represents going out from oneself to touch upon something else, and bringing part of the other energy back to yourself in some form. It signifies things that have two sides, and the union and attunement of two things. Ultimately the oneness resulting from the energy of Raido is the dance of your personality as combined with that of your spiritual self. All our earth relationships are a mirror of that dance. Raido is a journey to your truest self.

If you cast Raido in a rune reading, ask yourself what is really right for you now. Do not allow your ego to rule your decisions and actions. Ask your body, your heart, and your mind what is right for you. Rather than force matters, ask your inner self or the small still voice within what is right for you. Banish doubt. Then get out of the way and allow your journey to unfold.

In the mundane world of external reality, Raido signifies a journey, either a physical trip, an emotional shift, or a mental realization. The energy is that of a smooth horseback ride during which you enjoy the scent of the clean air, the sunlight dappling upon the ground, the interesting patterns cast by the towering trees upon your pathway, the taste of summer blackberries on your lips, and the unharnessed power of the steed beneath you.

I hope you enjoyed our Rune of the Day. May Raido bring you a pleasant journey and enhanced understanding along the way. Where do you most wish to travel?

Cheers & Happy Reading!

  1. So absolutely interesting! I am in awe of your ability to do it.
Thank you for the reading! As about where I’d like to travel? Hard to tell but I liked your description of a horse ride, so I’d do it if possible. As it’s not, I’ll limit to reading the beautiful paragraph you’ve written and, in my mind, I’ll do it.

  2. Very interesting! Since it’s about to storm at my house I think I will have to forgo the ride. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Great it the power of Raido. I have written the powerful steed and it is magical.

  4. What beautiful, lyrical writing. I think I would like to take a ride anywhere on that magical steed as you describe the journey. Pure bliss!
